CPI(M) to go into defeats

May 23, 2014 11:22 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:56 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

The State secretariat of the CPI(M) has decided to go in for a closer look at the defeat of party candidates in Kollam, Kozhikode, Vadakara, and Alappuzha, besides the sharp erosion in the LDF’s vote share in constituencies such as Thiruvananthapuram.

The CPI(M) secretariat, which concluded its two-day review of the election outcome, would place the proposal in this regard before the party State committee which would begin its meeting here on Thursday. While the defeat in Kollam, where Polit Bureau member M.A. Baby was in the fray, has shocked the party, that in Kozhikode and Vadakara has raised questions about the reliability of figures sent upward by the district-level committees.

Although the defeat in Alappuzha was expected, erosion in the traditional support base of the Left in the constituency has unsettled the party. In Kannur and Kasaragod, the party could win only with a low margin. All this is set to be discussed by the State committee as part of its election review. The exact nature of the inquiry mechanism would be decided by the committee after the discussion.
