CPI(M) flays BJP bid to involve Centre

Law and order is a State subject, says Kodiyeri

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of resorting to devious methods to destabilise the Left Democratic Front government by attempting to get the Centre involved in matters related to law and order, which is a State subject.

In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Balakrishnan termed the BJP-RSS leadership’s petition to the Governor an extremely condemnable and anti-democratic action.

Mr. Balakrishnan said the law and order situation in the State had not deteriorated to such an extent warranting the imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act as demanded in the petition. His party wanted peace in Kannur and had taken proactive positions at the conference convened by the Chief Minister and at the talks between the RSS-BJP and the CPI(M). The CPI(M) proposed to stick to this line. Political violence should not be perpetrated by party workers and they should not get provoked.
