Cooperative sector to build 4,000 houses

The cooperative sector is ready to construct 4,000 houses in flood-affected areas and is awaiting the list of beneficiaries from the Revenue Department, Minister for Cooperation Kadakampally Surendran has said.

Addressing a meet-the-press organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club on Thursday, Mr.Surendran said cooperative societies have decided to construct 1,500 houses and members of cooperative societies have decided to channelise their dividend for constructing 2,500 houses.

This is estimated at ₹200 crore. Students and faculty members of engineering colleges would lend technical support for the project.

This is expected to be completed by January 2019, he said.

Law for Munnar

The government would pilot a law to regulate construction in Munnar and the focus would be on promoting eco-friendly tourism, the Minister said.

Much more than the loss sustained to infrastructure facilities in the tourism sector, the flood has rendered about 15 lakh people who were active in the sector jobless, he said.
