Consumerfed (Kerala State Co-operative Consumers’ Federation Ltd) has registered sales worth a whopping Rs. 123 crore through its numerous special Onam-Ramzan fairs across the State.
While subsidised sales accounted for Rs. 58 crore, non-subsidised sales worth Rs. 10 crore were recorded through 4,782 Onam outlets alone, a release quoted Consumerfed president Joy Thomas, and managing director Riji G. Nair as saying.
The number of outlets exceeded the 4,000-mark as originally planned by Consumerfed as part of its market intervention measures to rein in prices of essential commodities during the festival season. Consumerfed kick-started its festival season sales with a 10-day Ramzan fair that started on August 1. It reaped in Rs. 37.04 crore, including sales of subsidised items worth Rs. 29.19 crore through its 2,707 outlets.

Special Onam fairs started on September 1 and continued till September 15, the eve of Onam. Sales worth about Rs. 17 crore were recorded at nearly 154 special fairs set up at the district and Assembly constituency levels.
Consumerfed managed to sell at subsidised rates through these outlets as many as 13 essential items, including four varieties of rice, sugar, coconut oil, green gram, Bengal gram, tuhar dal, chillies, besides an Onam payasam kit. Thrissur district with sales worth Rs. 9.52 crore ranked top in terms of sales followed by Kollam with Rs. 9.19 crore and Ernakulam with Rs. 8.06 crore.
