The Indian National Congress launched relief work in the flood-ravaged Ezhikkad colony, the State’s second-largest settlement colony, on Wednesday.

Anto Antony, MP, was coordinating the relief work in the colony where the flood had not spared even a single house, District Congress Committee (DCC) president Babu George said.

Mr. George said the DCC would extend support to the colony residents who had lost their homes. The party would construct houses for two families whose houses were destroyed in the flood by including them in the KPCC’s ‘1,000 Homes’ scheme. He said the MP would also coordinate the flood-relief work and rehabilitation of the flood victims in the colony.

Mr. Antony said dearth of safe drinking water was a major problem faced by the colony residents and the Congress workers had started a programme on Wednesday to sanitise the wells.

He said draining and cleaning of two wells in the colony had been

completed and more wells would be cleaned in the coming days. A large number of houses in the colony had been badly damaged in the floods and the Congress would explore every

possibility to repair them in a time-bound manner, he said.

Aid not given

They alleged that the authorities had not taken any effective steps to disburse the financial aid of ₹10,000 to the flood-hit families in the district. All India Congress Committee president Rahul Gandhi visited the colony on Tuesday.
