Congress leaders in the State have hailed the party’s victory in the Assembly elections in the Hindi heartland on Tuesday.

Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Mullappally Ramachandran described the Congress victory as a blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This was a blow to a fascist regime that cheated and impoverished the people. This was the victory of the Congress and the people, he said.

The BJP may not be able to recover from the shock it got in the semifinal that comes just before the Lok Sabha elections, he said.

Opposition unity

Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the results would help strengthen Opposition unity. This would increase the confidence of the party. People have realised that the Modi regime was a flop and now they vested their hopes on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, he said.

The victory would give strength to the Congress and Mr. Gandhi to face the Lok Sabha elections with confidence, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala said.

This would lead to the unification of democratic and secular forces and return of the Congress to power at the Centre. The results were a warning to those who tried to divide the nation, Mr. Chennithala said.
