State must invest in new technologies for tomorrow’s jobs: Governor

The government is planning to establish a Commerce Mission and promote private industrial estates, Governor P. Sathasivam has said.

In his address to the Assembly, he said it was the government’s policy to create conditions conducive to industrial development without compromising on labour and environmental standards.

He said local bodies would be encouraged to promote entrepreneurial activity. “It is hoped that they will eventually compete among themselves, like the local governments in China, in wooing investors by offering them a business-friendly environment.”

Kerala’s future, he said, was challenged by the rapid technological breakthroughs. However, he added, they also provided unique opportunities.

“With technological disruptions happening at a frenzied pace, the shape and character of tomorrow’s work world will alter dramatically. Automation, Artificial Intelligence, nano technology and robotics will make many jobs obsolete.”

This, he said, would require the State to invest in new technologies, borrowing the best from global competition.

World Skills Lyceum

Mr. Sathasivam said the government was working on the establishment of a World Skills Lyceum under the Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence to prepare the youth for tomorrow’s jobs. Efforts were on to set up 10 new industrial training institutes and upgrade the existing ITIs to international standards.

Recalling the havoc unleashed by Cyclone Ockhi along the Kerala coast, he said the government viewed the experience as a wake-up call to strengthen capabilities in handling climate change-induced disasters. He assured the House that the Central aid received by the State would be well spent to improve the disaster management system.
