Clean Kerala prioritises e-waste collection

November 07, 2019 11:05 pm | Updated 11:05 pm IST - KOCHI

Mumbai-based company will recycle it

Clean Kerala Company Limited, formed under the Local Self-Government Department for waste management, is streamlining e-waste management.

Hitherto, the company had been unable to take up the work properly because of the absence of a scientific recycling facility in the State. Now, a recycling company from Mumbai has been identified for the purpose, said P. Kesavan Nair, managing director, Clean Kerala. Local self-governments should collect e-waste and hazardous waste from homes. Once the waste is collected, the local bodies may contact Clean Kerala, he said.

Godowns in place

The company has arranged large godowns to store e-waste. There are godowns in Kannur (3,000 sq ft), Malappuram (7,500 sq ft), Kochi (4,000 sq ft), and Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram (10,000 sq ft).

Hazardous waste

In the case of hazardous waste such as CFL lamps, tubes and toner cartridges, manufactures would pay Clean Kerala for collecting them as they cause much harm to the environment. This is part of the agreement entered into with the Mumbai company, said S.S. Nagesh Kumar, in-charge of e-waste collection in Clean Kerala and also the State nodal officer for e-waste collection.

As per the agreement, the company would collect three tonnes of waste at a single point of collection. Clean Kerala would arrange for direct pick-up if a large office has to dispose of e-waste. Clean Kerala can be contacted at info@cleankeralacompany. com or cleankeralacompany@ gmail.com .
