Classical tag to Malayalam, Odia challenged

The Madras High Court on Wednesday ordered notice on a writ petition challenging a notification according ‘Classical Language’ status to Malayalam and Odia.

The First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M.M. Sundresh ordered that the notice would be returnable by April 8. It treated the stay petition as closed.

In the petition, R. Gandhi, a senior advocate, submitted that he had already challenged a notification declaring Kannada and Telugu as classical languages.

The petitioner submitted that Sanskrit and Tamil enjoyed world recognition as classical languages.

The impugned notification was totally a non-speaking one as it did not discuss the reason to come to a conclusion based on valid discussion and proper understanding of the facts before it.

The petitioner said the impugned notification did not reflect the opinion of the Cabinet and the discussion made by it and cogent reasons for accepting the recommendation.

Malayalam had not originated of its own as per the criteria for declaring it as a ‘Classical Language’.
