The State government on Sunday sought legal opinion from the Director General of Prosecution on the possibility of a further investigation into the alleged involvement of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien in the Suryanelli case, after Advocate General K.P. Dandapani declined to give legal advice. The victim had in a letter to her counsel at Supreme Court alleged that Mr. Kurien had raped her.
Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan sent a fax message to Director General of Prosecution T. Asaf Ali after Mr. Dandapani told him that he could not give legal advice in the case as he had once taken up a brief for the accused before the High Court. Mr. Ali has said he will give advice after going over High Court and Supreme Court verdicts as well as the trial court judgement and the case diary.
He would take into consideration the remark made by K.K. Joshua, a former member of the Special Investigation Team, that there was no evidence to prove that Mr. Kurien was not at Kumily on the day the victim claims he raped her.
