The Cheekode drinking water project, which had remained in limbo for about 25 years, is now ready for opening. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the first phase of the project on Saturday evening.
About 45,000 families living in Cheekode, Muthuvallur, Kuzhimanna, Vazhayur, Vazhakkad, Pulikkal, Pallikkal and Cherukavu grama panchayats, and the municipalities of Kondotty and Ramanattukara will benefit from the scheme.
K. Mohammedunni Haji, MLA, who visited the project site along with a team of civic body members from beneficiary panchayats, said the demands of all families for drinking water would be met from the multi-crore scheme.

He said water from the Chaliyar would be made available at the rate of 70-litre per person.
Water will be brought to the treatment plant at Rayinkode Hill, and will then be supplied to the tanks set up at Chullikkode, Parathakkad, Komparamba, Mukasseri, Pulikkal, and Cheppilikkunnu.
Pump sets, pumping lines, transformers and distribution lines extending 20 km have been set up.

The first phase of the project cost Rs.80.57 crore, said official sources.
The work on the drinking water project that began in 1992 had stopped owing to various issues, but resumed in 2008.
The first phase of work focused largely on bringing water to the supply tanks. Distribution of water will be strengthened in the second phase, which is expected to be completed in a year at a cost of Rs.60.40 crore.
