Chandy to open Kanamala bridge on Dec. 23

The much sought-after bridge across river Pampa at Kanamala on the Erumely- Elavumkal- Pampa road leading to Sabarimala is fast getting ready for commissioning.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the bridge at a function to be held at Kanamala on December 23, according to Raju Abraham, MLA.

The bridge has been constructed at a cost of Rs.7.60 crore. The project was launched by the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government under the Sabarimala scheme. However, the work started late due to the delay in getting environment clearance from the Union Ministry of Forests and Environment.

The 960-metre-long, 11.5-metre wide bridge with footpath on either side will be of great help to Sabarimala pilgrims taking the Erumely-Elavumkal- Pampa route. The new pre-stressed concrete structure bridges connects the districts of Pathanamthitta and Kottayam.

The existing narrow causeway across the river has been creating traffic congestion for hours together during rush days of the pilgrim season.

V.K.Ebrahim Kunju, Public Works Minister, will preside over the inaugural function.
