Chandy asks police to prevent violence over dam dispute

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, on Monday, directed police officials to prevent any untoward incidents in connection with the Mullaperiyar issue.

Addressing a conference of higher police officials here, the Chief Minister told them that action should be taken to prevent even isolated incidents. The conference was convened against the background of rumours spreading in Tamil Nadu that Tamils had been attacked in Kerala.

Mr. Chandy told the conference that full protection should be accorded to Sabarimala pilgrims. Traffic should be streamlined. There should be no cause for concern to the pilgrims. Steps should be taken in coordination with the Tamil Nadu police to check spreading of rumours.

The conference decided to intensify police presence and patrolling in areas bordering Tamil Nadu.

Additional Chief Secretary K. Jayakumar, Additional Director-Generals of Police Venugopal K. Nair and A. Hemachandran, and other senior police officials attended the conference.
