February 03, 2014 12:59 am | Updated May 18, 2016 05:27 am IST - MEENANGADI (Wayanad):

Union Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs K.V. Thomas said here on Sunday that the Union government had taken measures to transport foodgrain for public distribution in Kerala by ship as a part of setting up a viable public distribution network in the country.

The first shipment would reach Kochi port on February 22 from Kakinada port in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking after inaugurating a godown of the Food Corporation of India, with storage capacity of 5,000 tonnes, Mr. Thomas said that the government would expand the means of transportation to other ports in the country, if the first shipment was found to be cost-effective.
