Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, on Friday, accused a set of caste and community organisations in the State of engaging in opportunistic politics and trying to appease Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to gain favours from the ruling BJP government at the Centre.

Inaugurating the district conference of CPI(M) at Ottappalam near here, Mr. Vijayan said these forums had now taken a pro-Hindutva stand unmindful of their history of upholding secular and democratic values which helped set up a solid foundation for social justice and equality for those pushed to the peripherals by upper caste forces.

Mr. Vijayan lamented that even organisations which contributed significantly to Kerala renaissance had succumbed to the whims of Sangh Parivar forces, which had a decisive agenda. The stances of organisations such as Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha evoked concern.

Accusing the Oommen Chandy government of taking a stand favourable to the ‘Ghar vapasi’ reconversion moves of Sangh Parivar, targeting weaker communities, Mr. Vijayan said it exposed the links between Sangh Parivar and Congress in the State.

He said Mr. Chandy was allowing reconversion when other States were opposing the move. He demanded strong steps against those engaging in reconversion.

Says these organisations had once upheld secular, democratic values.
