Saving the new generation from liquor addiction and drug abuse assumes topmost priority in contemporary society, District and Sessions Court judge M.J. Shakthidharan has said.

He was inaugurating a day-long awareness campaign, organised jointly by the Excise Department and the district administration at the Collectorate conference hall here on Wednesday.

Mr. Shakthidharan said difficult terrains in the northern district made it difficult for the Excise Department to check smuggling of liquor and drugs.

Presiding over the function, District Collector P.S. Muhammed Sagir stressed the need to launch mass anti-drug and liquor awareness drive among the youth.

Madhujan, Director of the Thiruvananthapuram-based Karuna Sai de-addiction centre, handled the classes on the adverse impact of drug and liquor use at the programme.
