By-poll campaign to gain momentum

The campaign for the Aruvikkara Assembly by-election is set to hot up this week with several heavyweights descending on the constituency nestling close to the State capital.

Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan will be the first among prominent Kerala leaders to hit the campaign trail this week, inaugurating the campaign of the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Vijayakumar at Aryanad. Mr. Vijayakumar was among the first to file nomination papers for the by-election slated for June 27. He submitted his nomination papers before assistant development commissioner Johnson Premkumar after paying homage at the Martyrs’ Column in Palayam here and in front of the statue of E.M.S. Namboodiripad before the Legislative Assembly.

United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate K.S. Sabarinadhan and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominee O. Rajagopal will file their nominations on Wednesday.

Nomination papers will be submitted till 3 p.m. on Wednesday. Scrutiny will take place on Thursday and the nominations can be withdrawn till Saturday.

‘Situation favours LDF’

CPI (M) district secretary Kadakampally Surendran said that as things stood now, the situation in the constituency was favourable for the LDF.
