It was their love for music, especially old film songs, which drove a group of music enthusiasts in Thiruvananthapuram to form the Sreerenjini Music Forum two years ago.
For the last two years, its members have been meeting on every first Sunday of a month to sing old film songs. Sunday marks a special occasion — the forum’s 25th stage. The group has 60 members now, comprising entrepreneurs, engineers, doctors, businessmen and bankers. “Most of us are not trained singers but a few can sing well. Our shows have live orchestra and we rehearse hard. In the last two years, we conducted programmes paying tribute to some of the legends of the music industry,” says N. Mohandas, the forum’s convener. “Our second anniversary programme on Sunday will be dedicated to ONV,” said P.V. Sivan, president.
Songs sung by Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, T.M. Soundara Rajan, Kamukara Purushothaman, K.P. Udayabhanu, M.S. Viswanathan, A.M. Raja and Jikki; those written by P. Bhaskaran, Yusuf Ali Kecheri and composed by Bombay Ravi, A.T. Ummer and Noushad featured in the programmes in the last two years.
