Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran, on Sunday, lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for “trying to make inroads into the State through the ‘ghar vapsi’ religious conversion programme.”

Such attempts, hitherto confined to the northern region of the country, had commenced in Kerala noted for its communal harmony, Mr. Sudheeran said, presiding over a function organised by the District Congress Committee to mark the 130 foundation day of the Congress.

The KPCC president said the Narendra Modi government that had come to power in the Centre was trying to divide the country and the people. The British had adopted the same technique of dividing people on the basis of caste and creed.

“The challenge before us is to protect India’s secularism and democracy,” he told the party leaders and workers. The Congress had the responsibility to check the attempts being made by the BJP, Mr. Sudheeran said.
