Award for anti-endosulfan campaigner

December 02, 2011 07:26 pm | Updated 07:26 pm IST - Kozhikode:

Leelakumari Amma, who first brought to public attention the health hazards caused by the use of endosulfan through a petition in a munsiff court in Kasaragod, has been chosen for the Mukundan C. Menon Award instituted by the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations (NCHRO).

Leelakumari Amma was a senior agriculture assistant when she began her legal battle against the use of endosulfan much before mass agitations were launched demanding a ban on the pesticide.

The award instituted in memory of journalist Mukundan C. Menon was announced by Kunnathoor Radhakrishnan, NCHRO State president, and C.A. Harris, general secretary.
