The Fisheries Department will take comprehensive measures to restore and protect the fish wealth and biodiversity of Ashtamudi Lake in consultation with all stakeholders.
A decision in this regard was taken at a meeting chaired by Minister for Fisheries J. Mercykutty Amma here on Monday.
“The department will intensify the surveillance measures to curb illegal fishing methods and sustain the biodiversity of the lake,” said the Minister.

Scientific steps will be taken to increase clam production and protected zones will be established. Mangroves will be planted to recreate natural breeding grounds and measures will be taken to revive the population of State fish pearl spot.
In a bid to promote inland fish farming and to upgrade the socio-economic condition of the fishers, new measures like cage farming will be introduced.
The participation of fishers’ forums will be ensured before implementing the project. To conserve the fish population of backwaters, fisheries management councils will be formed.

Notice will be issued against those using illegal stake nets and Chinese nets for fishing.
