The house of self-taught artist Durga Malathi at Pattambi, near here, was attacked by unidentified persons late Thursday night.

They threw stones at her house and a vintage car parked on the compound. The windshield of the vehicle was damaged in the incident. The Pattambi police have registered a case.

The artist had earned the wrath of Sangh Parivar organisations by drawing a cartoon depicting her outrage at the brutal rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl at Kathua in Jammu and Kashmir.

She said she had been receiving abusive comments and death threats on her Facebook page after her artistic response to the incident.

Ms. Malathi said she had protested against such incidents in the same way in the past as well. She suspect that the Sangh Parivar might have been behind the attack as she and her supporters had been the subject of its hate campaign on social media for the last few days.

“They subjected me to online sexual harassment. Even those who supported my right to expression have been targeted,” she said.

The police have beefed up security to the artist and her residence.
