Kumaravel S., an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, (NIT-C), has been selected for the Kerala State Akshaya Oorja Award 2018 for his contributions to research in renewable energy.
Dr. Kumaravel, who was selected in the individual category of awards, instituted by the Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT), has been credited with undertaking research to evolve technologies in generating electricity from renewable sources of energy such as the sun and wind.

The awards were declared by Electricity Minister M.M. Mani here on Tuesday. Wilton Weavers Private Ltd., Alappuzha; College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram; Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram; and Integrated Rural Technology Centre (IRTC), Palakkad, won the awards in the industrial, educational, public, and non-profit organisations category. There were no award winners in the commercial category.
Kanakkary grama panchayat in Kottayam, and Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, Ernakulam, was adjudged the best in the local self-government institutions category and research and innovation categories respectively. Thrissur-based Solgen Energy Pvt. Ltd. was selected the best among commercial establishments involved in the field of renewable energy. Various institutions and companies were also selected for citations in each category.
The winners were selected by a jury that included educationist R.V.G. Menon, who had been presented the lifetime award for energy conservation a year ago, and Cooperative Academy of Professional Education (CAPE) director R. Sasikumar, among others.
