The town got a new landmark on Sunday, when Chief Minister Oommen Chandy dedicated to the public the ‘Akshara Shilpam’ — the latest work by veteran sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman — at the courtyard of Kottayam Public Library.

The Chief Minister said the sculpture denoted the impact letters had brought about to the town of Kottayam.

The new sculpture would always be a symbol of inspiration and motivation for the people to carry forward the great journey they had taken up with the explosion in education.

He said Mr. Kunhiraman has given the land an icon that would help them move ahead in their journey.

The 35-ft main installation is of a mother initiating her child into the world of letters, surrounded by a girl and a boy who are also keenly eyeing the letters. The cluster of sculptures include abstract and minimal art forms titled ‘Vanarodanam’, ‘Sooryavattom’, ‘Vattezhuthu’ and ‘Kolezhuthu’ in abstract and minimal art forms.

Abraham Itticheria, the president of Kottayam Public Library, presided over the dedication ceremony. Mr. Kunhiraman introduced the sculpture. Minister for Forests and Transport Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan delivered the key note address.
