‘Yatra’, organised by State Assembly and KSLM, to be flagged off from Kasaragod on Monday

The State Assembly and the Kerala State Literacy Mission (KSLM) will jointly organise a ‘yatra’ from Kasaragod to Thiruvananthapuram to create awareness on constitutional values on January 14. The yatra will be flagged off from Hosangadi.

P. Karunakaran, MP, will inaugurate the yatra at 4 p.m. It will cover 52 centres before concluding at Venganoor in Thiruvananthapuram district on January 24. The venue at Hosangadi has been named Govinda Pai Nagar, a press release said, adding that each of the 52 centres that the yatra would cover had been named after various renaissance leaders. The venue at Venganoor has been named Ayyankali Nagar, the release added.

KSLM Director P.S. Sreekala said training sessions at State, district and local body levels as part of the yatra had begun on November 26. The objective of the programme is to create awareness on the Constitution at the grassroots, she said in the release.

Classes are being conducted on the basis of a booklet released by the KSLM on the Constitution. As the programme comes in the wake of protests after the Supreme Court verdict allowing women of all age groups to enter the Sabarimala temple, stress on gender equality guaranteed by the Constitution will be its major highlight.

The yatra will conclude with a Constitution protection gathering, Sangamam, at Central Stadium in the capital on January 25. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the event. Around 15,000 equivalency learners, preraks, and literacy workers will attend the function.

As part of the literacy campaign, 60,000 sessions will be conducted for Class X and Plus-Two equivalency learners, the release informed. Ms. Sreekala said nearly one lakh resource persons will hold sessions for 50,00,000 people on the basic tenets of the Constitution.
