: Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar said here on Monday that the people’s movement had to be strengthened to fight communal fascism and neo-liberalism in the country.
Delivering a public address to commemorate the late Communist Party of India (CPI) leaders N.E. Balram and P.P. Mukundan, Mr. Kumar said a rainbow coalition had to be strengthened to wage a battle against the policies of communal fascism and neo-liberalism in the country. The Sangh Parivar was creating conflicts in the name of patriotism, he said adding that the real issues were being ignored and non-issues were being used to mobilise the people.
The student leader said that the larger context in the country pertained to the importance of creating unity of the oppressed, the poor, Dalits and Adivasis, he said. The communal fascists say that religion is more important than humanity, he said noting that the real objective should be universal education, creation of employment and social transformation. “Our battle is a battle for social democracy and equality,” he told the large audience at the function organised by the CPI district committee. The Sangh Parivar is creating divisions in society and speaking the language of hatred, he said.

Complimenting Kerala’s model of public education and literacy, Mr. Kumar said the students should be provided scientific education, quality education and secular education. Dalits and Adivasis in the country are outside the education system, he said. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comparison of Kerala to Somalia during the election speech, the student leader said that the State was known for its social and communal harmony and literacy.
CPI national executive member Pannian Raveendran inaugurated the meet. CPI leader C.N. Chandran presided. Party district secretary P. Santhosh Kumar was also present.
