Shutter of Thanneermukkom barrage damaged

A shutter of the Thanneermukkom barrage across Vembanad Lake broke on Thursday.

According to the district authorities, shutter number 20 which broke was corroded. The shutter was one of the 11 shutters that had been identified for maintenance.

In view of the development, the District Collectors of both Kottayam and Alappuzha decided to open all the shutters of the barrage.

The damage to the shutter would not have caused any damage to the crops in the surrounding paddy fields, as all the shutters were supposed to be opened by March 31, the authorities informed. However, it had to be postponed due to the delay in harvesting season.
