Mammootty, Shwetha Menon win best actor awards

The Mammootty-starrer ‘Pazhassi Raja,' written by M.T. Vasudevan Nair and directed by Hariharan, has won eight awards at the State film awards for 2009 that were announced here on Tuesday.

‘Paleri Manikyam Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha,' directed by Renjith, has won the award for the Best Feature Film and ‘Raamanam,' directed and produced by M.P. Sukumaran Nair, has won the award for the Second Best Feature Film.

Mammootty's role in ‘Paleri Manikyam' won him the best male actor award and its female lead, Shwetha Menon, won the Best Female Actor award.

Jagathy Sreekumar won the special jury award for his contributions to various films. P. Sukumar, who directed ‘Swa Le,' was adjudged the Best Debutant Director and ‘Ividam Swargamanu,' directed by Roshan Andrews, won the award for the Best Popular Film with artistic value.

The awards won by ‘Pazhassi Raja' are the following: Best Director-Hariharan, Best Scenarist-M.T. Vasudevan Nair, Second Best Actor-Manoj K. Jayan, Second Best Female Actor-Padmapriya, Best Film Editor-Sreekar Prasad, Art Director-Muthuraj, Costumer-Natarajan, and Dubbing Artiste-Shobby Tilakan.

Sooraj Venjaramoodu has been adjudged the best comedian for his performance in ‘Ivar Vivahitharayaal.' Baby Nivedita who acted in ‘Bhramaram' is the best child artiste.

The following are the other award winners: Best Story Writer-Sasi Paravur for ‘Kadaksham'; Cinematographer-K.G. Jayan for ‘Sufi Paranja Katha'; Lyricist-Rafeeq Ahammed for the song ‘Thekkini kolayil chumarail…' in ‘Sufi Paranja Katha'; Best Music Director- Mohan Sithara for the same song; Background Score-Rahul Raj for ‘Rithu'; Playback Singer male K.J. Yesudas for the song ‘Swantham swantham balyathiloode…' in ‘Madhya Venal'; Female Playback Singer Shreya Ghoshal for ‘Chanthu thottile…' in ‘Banaras'; Best Classical Singer Sharath for the song ‘Bhavayami paadumente…' in ‘Megha Theertham'; Best Sound Recorder N. Harikumar for ‘Patham Nilayile Theevandi'; Best Processing Laboratory-Chithranjali; Make-up Artiste - Renjith Ambadi, George for ‘Paleri Manikyam'; Choreographer-Dinesh Kumar for the song ‘Vennilave vennilave…' in ‘Sagar alias Jackey'; Children's Film ‘Keshu,' directed by Sivan; Documentary ‘Ezhuthattha Kathakal,' written by M.N. Karassery and directed by Vinod Mankara; Book on Cinema ‘Malayala Cinema: Desam, Bhasha, Samskaram,' written by G.P. Ramachandran; and Articles on Cinema ‘Chemmeen: Desa Bhavanayude Ethirolikal,' written by P.S. Radhakrishnan, and ‘Apaharikkapedunna Kalapangal,' by K.P. Jayakumar.

The award-winners were selected from 36 feature films, two children's films, two documentaries, 28 articles and 18 books on Malayalam cinema. The eight-member film jury was headed by Sai Paranjpye and comprised of actor Vidhubala, K. Madhu, B. Ajayan, S. Saradakutty, Mukhathala Sivaji, and K.G. Soman. Chalachitra Academy Secretary K.S. Sreekumar was the member secretary. The literature section was headed by P.P. Ravindran and consisted of Ummer Tharamel and Meera. Mr. Sreekumar was the member secretary.

The awards were announced by Minister for Cultural Affairs M.A. Baby and jury and Chalachitra Academy chairman K.R. Mohanan.
