The Mahatma Gandhi University has decided to introduce a centralised allotment process (CAP) for its under-graduate programmes for the coming academic year.
Speaking to The Hindu here on Thursday, University Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Rajan Varughese pointed out that the process would be applicable for degree programmes like B.Sc., B.A., B.Com, B.B.A., B.C.A. and other new generation courses that are being offered through government, aided and self-financing colleges affiliated to the University.
The proposal for introduction of the CAP for UG courses was put forward by the Academic Council of the University and was, subsequently, approved by its Syndicate in December 2010. “The proposal of implementing a single-window process for admission to various courses has been in accordance with the recommendations of the State Government and the UGC. However, the timeframe of implementation of the CAP can be decided only after the completion of the Class XII (or Plus Two) final examinations conducted by the Kerala State Board and the CBSE,” said Dr. Varughese.

Dr. Varughese said that the success of the CAP in creating transparency, cost-effectiveness and rule-based norms to admissions to postgraduate courses was the main catalyst for extension of the process to the UG courses. “In addition, a centralised system would assist in spreading info about the wide array of courses provided by the institutes to applicants from far-off places,” he pointed out.
The process would serve to fill all of the seats to UG courses in government colleges, 70 per cent in aided colleges and 50 per cent in self-financing colleges. The remaining 30 per cent of seats in aided colleges have been reserved for management and community quotas.
The registration and submission of relevant details can be made online through the University web portal www.mgu.ac.in. The University has entered into collaboration with the State Government to create a host of facilities for registration. In addition to the Study Centres and the Information Centres of the University, the registration procedures can be fulfilled through the facilities provided by the IT@School Project and the Akshaya Centres of the government, according to Dr. Varughese.

In order to facilitate a hassle-free payment option for students, the University will soon enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the State Bank of Travancore (SBT). The application fee has been fixed at Rs. 100 for applicants in the general category and Rs. 50 for those belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes categories.
The University will also hold discussions with the various students’ and teachers’ organisations, college principals, and representatives of college managements to remove any existing roadblocks and arrive at unanimous support for the process.
