Reconversion campaign has the blessings of Chandy, says LDF convener

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) would launch a State-wide campaign against the reconversion campaign of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

LDF convener Vaikom Viswan told a news conference after a meeting of the LDF State committee here on Monday that the reconversion campaign of the Sangh Parivar was taking place with the blessings of the Oommen Chandy government.

While several other State governments had taken stern measures when complaints about forcible conversions came up, the Kerala government was doing nothing of the kind.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s contention was that there was no forcible conversion in the State. However, his party colleague, K.C. Venugopal, had told Parliament that forcible conversions were indeed taking place in Kerala. This clearly showed that Mr. Chandy was colluding with the RSS and the Sangh Parivar, the LDF convener said.

Mr. Viswan pointed out that under Article 25 of the Constitution, every Indian citizen was free to profess the religion of his or her choice. Any attempt at forcible conversion would violate this Constitutional guarantee. The RSS attempt in Kerala was to engineer conversions using both force and enticements. The State government had the duty to check such practices using strong laws.
