The panchayati raj institutions have been asked to take necessary measures to face the possible drought situation expected during the ensuing summer.

Speaking at the District Development Committee meeting, District Collector C. A. Latha said the PRIs should take necessary steps for the protection of the water sources and also for construction of check dams where ever necessary.

She wanted officials to identify areas which could have water scarcity and take preventive measures. It was also decided to clean up the rivulets in the western low-lying areas of the hyacinth menace.

According to K. Suresh Kurup, MLA, the rivulets have been clogged with hyacinth and this has not only blocked the movement of boats affecting tourism industry, but also made the life of the local people unbearable.

It was informed that the plastic ban for the Sabarimala pilgrimage was being implemented seriously. Counters have been opened at the KSRTC bus station and at Erumeli.
