In a veiled attack on the CPI, CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has accused those who had persisted with the Kerala Law Academy Law College stir after February 4 as having ‘fallen into a trap set by the BJP.’
In his weekly article in the CPI(M) organ Deshabhimani on Friday, Mr. Balakrishnan pointed out that Education Minister C. Ravindranath himself had held talks with the striking students on February 4, after the 17 demands put forward by the SFI were accepted and the management had produced the minutes of the agreement with the SFI before the Additional District Magistrate, Thiruvananthapuram, as demanded by the striking students.
“With their decision not to agree with the settlement and withdraw the strike, the others had fallen into the political trap set by the BJP,” he said.

Hinting at the real target of his article through an elaborate review of the close relations between the CPI(M) and the CPI over the past several decades, Mr. Balakrishnan reminded all concerned that nothing that had the potential to weaken the unity between the CPI(M) and CPI should be done.
“In the present context, the LDF government in Kerala is a model for the rest of the country. The CPI(M) stand is that nothing that would hurt this position should happen within the alliance. The LDF’s style is to formulate policies at the level of the alliance and implement these at the level of the government. That is why not all who wield swords become oracles during LDF rule,” the CPI(M) leader said.
Mr. Balakrishnan cautioned party cadres and sympathisers about the possible emergence of a Congress- Indian Union Muslim League- BJP alliance in the State in the near future. “There are certain things that should keep [us] alert post the law academy stir and related developments. Key among these is the possibility of a ‘Co-Lea-B [Congress-League-BJP] alliance emerging any time soon to corner the LDF. The law academy stir proves that the UDF’s opposition to the RSS and BJP is but skin deep,” he said.
