Kerala BJP leader Sekhar passes away

B. K. Sekhar, State vice-president of the BJP, died at a private hospital in Kochi on Wednesday.

Mr. Sekhar (51), who was a candidate in the Assembly election from Thiruvananthapuram constituency, was on treatment for liver cancer and had to keep away from campaigning for the April 13 elections.

Mr. Sekhar entered politics as a student. He has been the Thiuruvananthapuram district president of the BJP and State convenor of the party’s media cell and its spokesman in the State. Earlier, he had served in different capacities in Bharatiya Yuva Morcha and Vidhyardhi Morcha. He also worked as chairman of the Thiruvanathapuram Airport Development Authority, was member of the Senate of Kerala University and Director Board member of Canara Bank.

He is survived by his wife Shyama and daughter Gouri Kalayani. His body will be placed at the party headquarters from 10 a.m. on Tuesday for the public to pay homage and will be cremated at Thycaud in the afternoon.

Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan and other leaders have condoled the death of Mr. Sekhar.
