Veteran Congress leader K. Karunakaran on Wednesday asserted that the incumbent Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee cannot take a decision on re-admitting his son, K. Muraleedharan, to the party because the process for conducting organisational elections had already been initiated.

Speaking at the KPCC executive committee meeting, which started its session here on Wednesday morning, Mr. Karunakaran maintained that the executive should refer the decision to the party High Command.

Mr. Karunakaran has been campaigning for his son's re-admittance to the party and the executive committee was convened to discuss his letter seeking a discussion on Mr. Muraleedharan's return among other things listed on the agenda. Mr. Karunakaran has been discussing this issue with several party leaders and on Tuesday he called up the KPCC president and sought a meeting with him.

The incumbent leadership has not changed its stand on readmitting the former Congress leader. An earlier executive committee meeting had rejected Mr. Karunakaran's proposal.

The KPCC executive committee meeting is still on, but Mr. Karunakaran, who recently recovered from a bout of illness, left the hall after his speech.
