April 29, 2010 06:56 pm | Updated November 28, 2021 08:42 pm IST - Palakkad:

Ramesh Chennithala, president, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), has said that the committee will discuss the decision of the Kerala Congress (Joseph) to merge with the Kerala Congress (M).

Mr. Chennithala told presspersons here on Thursday that K.M. Mani, leader of the Kerala Congress (M), a prominent constituent of the Opposition United Democratic Front, informed him of the merger move only on Wednesday. He had talked to Leader of Opposition Oommen Chandy about the move and they had similar views on the issue.

“Though anybody coming out of the [ruling] LDF [Left Democratic Front] is a welcome development, we have to take people into confidence and convince them of its political necessity and significance,” he said.

When told that the Youth Congress and the Kerala Students' Union (KSU) had opposed the merger, he said they were free to express their opinion. The parent organisation, Congress, could have a different opinion. The party was not interested in a public debate on the matter.
