A postal stamp to mark the silver jubilee of declaration of Silent Valley as a National Park will be released by Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh here on Saturday.
One of the world’s rarest surviving rainforests and a treasure house of biodiversity, the Silent Valley in Kerala was declared a National Park on November 15, 1984 after the country’s pioneering conservation campaign.
The Silent Valley was later dedicated to the nation by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in September 1985.

The Centre had recently announced that a biodiversity research centre would be set up in Silent Valley, which would be named after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Besides the stamp release, several programmes, including seminars, honouring of environmental campaigners and visits to the Silent Valley, located about 30 km from here, have been planned to mark the occasion.
State Forest Minister Benoy Viswam, conservationists and environmental campaigners would participate in the two-day programmes.
