The Kerala Assembly on Thursday adopted the Kerala Inland Fishery Bill that seeks to streamline inland fishing operations and ensure sustainability of the inland fishery sector and fisher folk amidst Opposition uproar.
The Bill, as reported by the subject committee, also seeks to give legislative backing for the government's efforts at the management, protection and breeding operations in the inland fisheries sector. It also seeks to control aquaculture, promote social fisheries and protect the traditional fishing rights of fisher folk.
Fisheries Minister S. Sharma, who piloted the Bill, accepted several amendments proposed in writing by both treasury and Opposition benches, but the consideration of the Bill—having 46 clauses—took only less than half-an-hour on account of the turmoil in the House.
