Heavy rains cause damage, landslips in district

Heavy rains lashing the district for the last two days has caused extensive damage and landslips at certain areas. Seven houses were partially destroyed in the landslips that occurred at seven places in Kanathanad, Thalayad, and Kudaranji grama panchayat in the hilly areas of the district. No casualties were reported so far.

Several families in the affected areas were shifted to safer places. Traffic was disrupted in the national highway 212 connecting Kozhikode with Wayanad. Heavy rains raised the water level in c. The district collector had warned those residing near the dam area of the possibility of release of water from the reservoir in case of further rise in water level.

Rail traffic was disrupted for a few hours in the morning as gushing waters led to the erosion of soil on the railway track causing minor damage to the track in Cherode near Vadakara. However traffic was restored soon after undertaking repair works.
