United Democratic Front (UDF) convener P.P. Thankachan has said that a favourable climate prevails for the return of K. Muralidharan to the Congress fold.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday to announce the details of the Kerala Mochana Yatra (Kerala Liberation Campaign) to be captained by opposition leader Oommen Chandy, Mr. Thankachan said that no one in the state unit of the party was against his re-induction.

He, however, declined to give a time frame stating that a final decision on the matter was to be taken by the party high command. Mr. Thankachan said that he was personally of the opinion that the ousted leader should be allowed in without much delay.

He refused to be drawn into the controversy surrounding the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court K.G. Balakrishnan.

Asked about the UDF position on the demand that Mr. Balakrishnan should step down as the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission in the wake of allegations against him, Mr. Thankachan said that UDF had not discussed the issue.

He said that allegations had been raised not against Mr. Balakrishnan but his son-in-law Sreenijan. The Youth Congress as also the State government has launched an inquiry into the allegations. “Let the inquiry complete and the truth will come out,” Mr. Thankachan said.
