Expert team to study leak at Mullaperiyar

The Kerala Cabinet decided to depute an expert team to investigate a fresh leak found on the Mullaperiyar dam on Wednesday.

Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan told the media after the Cabinet meeting that the leak was detected at a height of 130 feet on the 18{+t}{+h} block of the dam. The team would be asked to study and submit a report on the leakage.

Retired Chief Engineer and Chairman of the Mullaperiyar Special Cell M. K. Parameswaran Nair, Retired Chief Engineer M. Sasidharan and Chief Engineer (Irrigation and Administration and Inter-State Waters) P. Lathika would be the members of the Committee.

The leak was notice as the water level in the dam rose to 135 feet.

The water level as on Wednesday was 135.1 feet. Heavy inflows into the reservoir has subsided and the water level is rising only slowly now.
