Damage to crops, houses in rain

Summer rain which has been lashing the district for three days wreaked havoc in the district, with Thodupuzha region suffering the maximum damage. The loss has been estimated at Rs. 1.45 crore. The loss to standing crops, including rubber and plantain cultivation, has been estimated at Rs.40.48 lakh. Eight houses were completely damaged in the rain and 401 houses suffered partial damage.

Standing crops were damaged in Purappuzha, Mannakkudy and Muniyara areas. Snapping of power supply lines resulted in the breakdown of electricity supply to several areas.

According to the official estimate, a rain-related death was reported from Peerumade area.

The official said that a final report on the total damage was being prepared. He said that the total loss would be higher as rain was continuing. About 1,020 farmers were affected by the unexpected rain, he said.
