In a major development, a DNA test on Ameerul Islam, accused in the murder of a Dalit law student in Perumbavoor, has confirmed that his samples matched with the DNA profile developed from the blood samples collected from the crime scene.

Officials confirmed the receipt of a communication in this regard from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Thiruvananthapuram, which would be officially handed over through the court.

Second test
The police conducted the DNA test for a second time at the FSL as the court could accept scientific examinations carried out at government institutions only.
Officials said the police had sent a knife they had recovered from a plot behind the victim’s house a few days after the murder for further examination.
The knife had been sent to the government FSL Thiruvananthapuram, to find traces of blood in its wooden handle.

Meanwhile, the mother and sister of the victim on Tuesday gave statement to the police that they had not seen Ameerul before. Sources with the Special Investigation Team said that they were taken to Aluva Police Club after the mother requested ADGP B. Sandhya to see her daughter’s murderer.

On seeing Ameerul, she asked him “Why did you kill my daughter”, to which he replied that he killed her on the spur of the moment. He also reportedly said that he was offended when the woman showed him her footwear on the day of the murder.
Evidence collection
Earlier in the day, the police took the accused to the victim’s house for collecting evidence.
Amid tight security, Ameerul was taken to the house with his face masked around 6.30 a.m.
The police, however, were unable to take Ameerul inside the lodge at Vaidyasalappady, where he had been staying for the past several months as people in large number thronged the areas to catch a glimpse of the accused.
Ameerul will be kept in police custody till Thursday.
When asked why he killed the law student, Ameerul said it was a spur of
the moment act.
