Cong. accuses govt. of sidelining Gandhiji

The Opposition on Tuesday alleged that the Pinarayi Vijayan government had gone the Narendra Modi way in sidelining Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

While Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala highlighted the fact that the government circular on observing two-minute silence on January 30 does not mention Gandhiji’s martyrdom, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Joseph Vazhakkan found something amiss in the cover page of the invitation for the diamond jubilee celebrations of the State Assembly.

According to him, on the cover page the statue of Mahatma Gandhi was missing in the photograph taken from the gate of the Assembly. The huge statue of Mahatma Gandhi alone will be visible if a photograph is taken from this angle. On the cover of the jubilee invite, the statue of EMS, that is located outside the Assembly premises, has been superimposed in place of the Mahatma Gandhi statue.

Mr. Vazhackan said Gandhiji and B.R. Ambedkar, whose statue too is visible from the gate, had been deliberately sidelined.

Drop circular: Sudheeran

Thrissur Staff Reporter writes: After the Centre, the State government too is showing disrespect to the Father of the Nation, said KPCC president V.M. Sudheeran.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday, Mr. Sudheeran said the government circular, which gives guidelines for observation of Martyrs’ Day on January 30 (the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi), did not have Gandhiji’s name.

“The circular issued to all government offices giving direction to observe silence for two minutes at 11 a.m. on January 30 to remember people who sacrificed their lives for Independence did not mention Gandhiji’s name. The government has ignored the Mahatma by omitting his name from the circular,” he said.
