The Department of Industries is hosting an international conference on the ‘Resurgence of State-owned enterprises-role of ownership policy and corporate governance' here on December 10 and 11.
A department press note issued here on Friday said the conference had been conceived as a sequel to the national conference on the ‘Resurgence of State-owned enterprises-the Kerala experience' held in Delhi in November last year. The aim of the seminar was to draw public attention to the acclaimed strategic initiatives undertaken by the State government and the resurgence of the State-owned enterprises, it said.
The release said when the government assumed office in 2006, it had declared a policy for protecting and reviving government enterprises. The thrust was on revamping and modernising them without privatising the assets and convert them into productive zones. Only 12 out of the 42 PSUs were registering profit in 2005-06. By 2010-11, all PSUs under the department were expected to become profitable, it said.

Experts from different countries would attend the conference and deliberate and evolve strategies for the growth and development of PSUs. It was also proposed to develop a platform for discourses and interaction on PSUs resurgence. Jomo Kwame Sundaram, Assistant General Secretary for Economic Affairs, United Nations, would inaugurate the conference, it said.
Industries Minister Elamaram Karim would preside. Different aspects of the resurgence of State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) would be discussed at the conference. Representatives from Europe, Africa, Nigeria, China, Sri Lanka and various international bodies, Central PSUs, trade union leaders and academicians would attend the conference.
