A team of scientists led by Dr C.Muralidharan of Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) which surveyed the landslip areas in Poochapra and Thumbichimala on Saturday said that the cloudburst causing an avalanche in a short time resulted in the landslip and a distance of nearly 12 k.m.it made an effect. The cloudburst occurred in a limited circle, he said and added that seven landslips occurred in the close vicinity area.
He said that such phenomena was not unusual and if the rains prolonged for some time it would not have resulted in the landslip, that caused heavy damage in a vast area in addition to the lose of three lives.
The area is prone to landslip, he said and added that the scree zone could easily make an impact more than its effect when an avalanche occurred in no-scree zones.

It made the effect on mud, uprootted trees and other materials moving to a long distance than that of an ordinary landslip. The slopes and the topography of the place made its impact heavy. There was no slope stabilisation in the area, which rather intensified the effect of the landslip in a distant route.
He said that a cable work near the Thumbichmala road from where the landslip started also had an effect as the soil was loose and the breaches intensified on the way where the water flowed down. He also suggested for a strong foundation and efficient construction of the road, as there is slope on the either side of it, for safety in future.
