2,467 died in road accidents in Kerala this year

A total of 2,467 persons died in road accidents in Kerala this year, the state government today said.

As many as 2,467 people died and some 28,100 persons were injured in 23,745 road accidents in the state till September 12, Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan informed the assembly.

The government has instructed the departments concerned to strictly implement the existing traffic rules, he said.

“Instructions initiating steps to cancel licence of drivers involved in more than two accidents have also been given,” he said.

Vehicle checking had been intensified and the state’s traffic administration would be brought under an official in the rank of Inspector General of Police, he said.

As many as 60,103 cases were registered for drunken driving and 8,921 for using mobile phones while driving, he said.

Few road safety proposals, including providing helmets to two-wheeler drivers with assistance from voluntary organisations, came up during a high level meeting held to discuss the issue recently, he said.
