Senior Congress leaders, Union Ministers call on him

The former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, on Tuesday held consultations with lawyers on the chances of the Delhi High Court granting bail to his daughter and party Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi.

Informed sources said the DMK president, who was scheduled to leave for Chennai after meeting Ms. Kanimozhi in the Tihar jail on Monday, postponed his journey to hold consultations with a battery of lawyers, including party lawyer R. Shanmugasundaram, who is now appearing for her in the court.

However, Mr. Karunanidhi could not meet senior lawyer and Rajya Sabha member Ram Jethmalani as the latter was away from Delhi and will return only on May 29. Mr. Jethmalani appeared for Ms. Kanimozhi in the CBI Special Court and moved her bail petition.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders and Union Ministers, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jayanti Natarajan and Farooq Abdullah, called on him. The visits were described as “courtesy calls.”

Amid the developments, Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala arrived here on Tuesday night on his way to Chandigarh. He is the only appointee of the National Democratic Alliance regime still continuing in office even in the UPA-II government. His term ends in November 2012. He might meet some leaders on Wednesday, before leaving for Chandigarh on Thursday.
