IRCTC website continues to choke

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation website continues to be under pressure, much to the chagrin of passengers who could not book tickets online for about 10 minutes on Wednesday morning.

The website flunked, following a network glitch attributed to the continued festival rush for about a week. Adding to the pressure is the demand for tickets from those wanting to celebrate Chhat Puja back home.

The IRCTC website choked a number of times in the run-up to Deepavali with people desperately trying to book tickets to go home.

On Wednesday, the website collapsed soon after Tatkal ticket booking commenced at 10 a.m. but was restored after 10 minutes. However, only about 53,000 tickets were booked as against the normal figure of 60,000 during the two-hour period for Tatkal from10 a.m. and 12 noon.

There were more than 12 lakh hits during this period, while the system is capable of handling just about 10 lakh connections, officials maintained.

IRCTC hopes to improve the system within three months and increase its running capacity to 30 lakh-40 lakh hits.
