A search was on for the men who cut his tongue and assaulted him when he refused to convert to Islam. A special police unit had taken up investigation and it was cooperating closely with the state prosecutor, the spokesman said.

The victim told the police that he was going to a pub shortly after 10 on Christmas Eve when the men accosted him and demanded that he convert to Islam.

Earlier, in a press statement, the Bonn Police Commissioner said they threatened to cut his tongue if he refused to convert to Islam. As he tried to move away, they attacked him and one of them cut his tongue.

After the attackers left in a car, a passerby helped the student in calling an ambulance and he was taken to a hospital. He was bleeding heavily from his head and mouth when an ambulance and police officials arrived, the statement said.

The police have issued an appeal for help from eyewitnesses to track down the assailants.
