India has given an assurance that none of the four million individuals who were excluded from the draft NRC in Assam will be deported to Bangladesh, a leading member of the ruling coalition of Dhaka said here on Tuesday.
Al-Haj Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizvandary, leader of the Bangladesh Tariqat Foundation, said he had received promises in this regard from the leading members of the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit.
“The Government of India has conveyed to me that the 40 lakh people (left out of the draft NRC) of Assam will not be sent to Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, we are anxiously looking at their condition. I met the Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and he said that they are not going to Bangladesh as they are part of the Indian economy and the government is trying its best to manage the situation,” said Mr. Maizvandary.

He said Dhaka would not allow sudden influx of people into its territory. “Border arrangement is strong on both sides and we will not tolerate anyone coming into our country. They have acquired identity cards and they are now Indian citizens.”
This is the first comment from a member of the government of Bangladesh since the draft NRC-list was released on July 30.
Mr. Maizvandary is from the Chittagong region, which is facing the brunt of the Rohingya crisis. “The condition of the Rohingya is a very big issue for Bangladesh and needs to be resolved. It is not just an internal matter of Bangladesh. Peace in Bangladesh will help peace in India,” he said.
